Our Pastor and First Lady

Pastor Hill is a native of Jones County. He holds degrees from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Shaw Divinity School and an honorary degree from Bethlehem Bible College, Roanoke, Va. He was called to preach under the tutelage of the late Dr. C. W. Anderson of United Institutional Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC. Pastor Hill was called by God to preach the gospel. He preached his initial sermon entitled “Follow Me and He Will Make You Fishers of Men”, Matt 4:19 in June 1977. Pastor Hill assumed his first pastorate in 1979 and was called to Locust Grove in 1996. He and his wife, Barbara, have three grown children and two grandchildren.

Our Pastor and Barbara serve relentlessly to enhance the ministry at the Locust Grove Baptist Church and the High Point Education and Missionary Baptist Association.

Pastor Hill often comments, “I am like the Prophet, John the Baptist, a voice crying in the Wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord.” Matt 3:3

Church History

The cornerstone on Locust Grove Baptist Church states that the church was founded in 1860. Locust Grove Baptist Church was organized in 1868 by the late Rev. Harry Cowan. The first congregation worshipped in an old log building which stood a few hundred yards directly north of the present site. Near the church stood a locust tree from which the church took its name. This log building was replaced by a frame structure then a brick building. In October 2002, a groundbreaking was held on which a new fellowship hall was completed in June 2003 with a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen. On June 20, 2003, the members dedicated the new fellowship hall to the glory of God.

Since 1868, only ten pastors have served the congregation: Harry Cowan, Spencer Thomas, S.G. Gilmer, A.T. Alston, Charles Raeford, Alexander O. Walker, Howard L. Graves, Richard Thomas, Alexander O. Walker, returned for the second time, and William G. Hill, Sr., who has been our pastor since May 1996.
